21 CuM Electric Shovel Commissioned at Gevra
South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) has commissioned India’s first 21 CuM Electric Shovel at its Gevra mega project. The 21 cubic metre (CuM) electro-hydraulic face shovel is expected to boost coal production and improve mining efficiency.
SECL Chairman-cum-Managing Director (CMD) Shri Harish Duhan inaugurated the advanced machine. Director (Technical, Planning & Projects) Shri Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra was also present at the event.
The deployment marks a major technology upgrade for large-scale coal mining operations.
Advanced Features Improve Mining Safety
The 21 CuM Electric Shovel comes with advanced systems designed to improve operator safety, comfort and operational efficiency.
The machine features a 360-degree camera and an operator fatigue monitoring system. It also has an air-suspension seat and adjustable joystick for better control and operator comfort.
Hydraulic stairs provide safer access to the equipment. A gas-based fire suppression system adds protection during operations. The machine also comes with a FOPS-standard safe cabin to enhance operator protection.
These features will support safer working conditions and more efficient equipment operation at the mine.
21 CuM Electric Shovel to Boost Coal Production
The high-capacity 21 CuM Electric Shovel will support overburden removal and coal extraction at the Gevra project.
Gevra is one of Asia’s largest coal mines. The new mining equipment is expected to improve excavation efficiency and support SECL’s production targets.
Faster overburden removal can also help improve the overall productivity of mining operations.
