UPI Transactions in August rose 22% year-on-year to 24.51 billion, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The value of UPI transactions also increased 20% to Rs 29.82 lakh crore. The latest figures highlight the continued expansion of India’s digital payments ecosystem. UPI continues to see strong adoption among consumers, merchants and businesses, strengthening its role in India’s digital economy.

UPI transaction volumes increased 22% YoY to 24.51 billion in August, while transaction value rose 20% to Rs 29.82 lakh crore. The platform processed an average of 791 million transactions every day during the month. Meanwhile, IMPS recorded 360 million transactions worth Rs 7.04 lakh crore. The UPI network now has 741 live banks participating in the platform.
UPI Transactions in August Show Strong Growth
UPI processed around 791 million transactions daily in August. The average daily transaction value stood at approximately Rs 96,205 crore. The figures point to sustained demand for instant digital payments across retail, merchant and business transactions.
The August performance also marked an increase from July. UPI processed 23.66 billion transactions in July, while transaction value stood at Rs 29.88 lakh crore. The platform processed around 763 million transactions daily during the month. Its average daily transaction value was approximately Rs 96,383 crore. While transaction volumes increased in August, the overall transaction value remained broadly stable compared with July.
UPI Digital Payments Expand Across India
The growth of UPI digital payments has been significant over the past decade. According to an official factsheet, annual UPI transaction volumes increased nearly 12,000-fold, rising from around 2 crore transactions in FY 2016–17 to more than 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025–26. Annual transaction value also increased sharply, from Rs 0.07 lakh crore to nearly Rs 314 lakh crore during the same period.
The rapid expansion reflects the growing use of digital payments across India. UPI has enabled consumers, merchants and businesses to make instant and interoperable payments directly through bank accounts. Its wider adoption has also strengthened India’s digital financial infrastructure.
UPI Network Expands to 741 Live Banks
The UPI ecosystem has expanded significantly, with 741 live banks now participating in the network. The platform enables real-time payments between users, merchants and financial institutions. This interoperability has helped increase access to digital payment services across different customer and business segments.
For businesses, the wider UPI network supports greater digital payment acceptance. It also provides customers with a faster and more convenient way to complete transactions.
UPI Expands International Presence
UPI is also increasing its international footprint. India’s real-time payment platform is now accepted in 11 countries, with Greece and the Maldives among the latest markets to adopt the system. The expansion allows Indian travellers to use UPI-enabled applications for seamless digital payments at participating merchants overseas.
The international adoption of UPI also supports India’s efforts to expand its digital payment infrastructure beyond domestic markets. It gives Indian users greater convenience while travelling and strengthens UPI’s position in the global payments ecosystem.
NIPL Expands UPI Reach in Uzbekistan
The international expansion gained further momentum after NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) entered into a commercial agreement with Uzbekistan’s National Interbank Processing Centre, which operates the HUMO payment system.
Under the partnership, Indian travellers can use UPI-enabled applications to scan interoperable UZQR codes and make instant merchant payments across Uzbekistan. The agreement adds another market to UPI’s international network and supports the growth of cross-border digital payments.
UPI Transactions Continue to Drive Digital Payments Growth
The rise in UPI transactions in August highlights the continued momentum of India’s digital payments ecosystem. Higher transaction volumes reflect strong domestic adoption among consumers and businesses. At the same time, UPI’s expansion into international markets is increasing its global relevance.
With more banks participating and digital payments becoming increasingly integrated into everyday commerce, UPI continues to strengthen its position as a key component of India’s digital financial infrastructure.
