Strategic Boost: India, Sweden Strengthen Cooperation in Key Sectors

Swedish and Indian officials met in New Delhi for their eighth round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC), during which they reaffirmed their resolve to further their collaboration in all areas of politics, economics, and strategy.

Dag Hartelius, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, and Sibi George, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, co-chaired the consultations. Trade and investment, defence and security, innovation, sustainability, and people-to-people exchanges were among the many sectors that were evaluated and agreed upon during the comprehensive review of bilateral relations.

The importance of the recently negotiated India-EU Free Trade Agreement was also brought up in the negotiations. This agreement is intended to pave the way for stronger trade, investment, and technological cooperation between Sweden and India.

Hartelius and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met separately to further bilateral collaboration and strengthen the larger India-EU strategic alliance.

Earlier interactions have also served to build ties; for example, Ebba Busch visited India for the AI Impact Summit 2026, where she and Jyotiraditya Scindia discussed how to work together more effectively in the areas of digital infrastructure, telecoms, and innovation-driven industries.

India and Sweden have a solid connection that is based on mutual commitment to tackling global issues including sustainability, security, and technological progress, as well as strong links to commerce and investment. They also work together on research and development.
