Rising LPG Booking Scams Trigger Government Warning to Consumers

On Thursday, the Indian government issued a warning about an upsurge in cyber crime involving LPG bookings. Scammers are using messaging apps like WhatsApp to spread harmful files like “GAS BILL UPDATE APK” to unsuspecting customers.

Users should exercise caution when downloading or installing apps from unknown sources, as authorities have issued a warning that such files could allow illegal access to personal data and bank accounts. Only legitimate platforms should be used for LPG bookings and purchases, according to consumers.

Also, to make sure that LPG delivery doesn’t stop, the federal government has ordered all states and union territories to beef up their administrative and logistical systems. Efforts are being made to ensure a smooth flow of LPG tanks and cylinders, as well as to closely monitor supplies at the district level.

Additionally, states are being requested to release public advisories in order to reduce unnecessary purchases, promote responsible use of LPG, and guarantee the correctness of the information being disseminated. Home delivery services will continue as usual, and consumers are being encouraged to utilise internet booking channels rather than make unnecessary trips to distributors.

Improved refinery output, new booking intervals of 25 days in cities and up to 45 days in rural areas, and prioritisation of funding for vital services like healthcare and education are all steps the government has taken to stabilise supply.

In addition, the Ministry of Coal has provided support and issued orders to Coal India Limited and Singareni Collieries Company Limited to improve availability of alternative fuels including kerosene and coal in order to alleviate pressure on LPG demand.

In addition to proposing an extra 10% allocation of commercial LPG to states, the government is speeding up the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections in an effort to further standardise distribution and ensure supply reliability.
