Renewable Push Accelerates as India Adds Record 44.5 GW Capacity in 2025

India achieved a record renewable energy capacity addition of 44.51 GW in 2025 (up to November), nearly double the 24.72 GW added in the same timeframe the previous year.

The total installed renewable energy capacity reached 253.96 GW in November 2025, reflecting a more than 23% increase from 205.52 GW in November 2024. Solar energy contributed significantly with an addition of 34.98 GW, bringing the total solar capacity to 132.85 GW in November 2025, up over 41% from 94.17 GW the previous year. Wind energy also saw growth, with 5.82 GW added, leading to an installed capacity of 53.99 GW, which is a 12.5% increase from 47.96 GW in November 2024.

Aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s COP-26 vision, India aims for 500 GW of non-fossil energy capacity by 2030. The country surpassed 50% of its cumulative electric power capacity from non-fossil sources in June 2025, five years ahead of the 2030 target under the Paris Agreement.

As of November 2025, non-fossil installed capacity hit 262.74 GW, constituting 51.5% of the total electricity capacity of 509.64 GW. Additionally, July 29, 2025 marked a historic day when renewables supplied 51.5% of the total electricity demand of 203 GW.
