According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB), there is a fraudulent message going around social media that says SBI YONO accounts will be suspended unless customers update their Aadhaar details promptly.
The message, identified as a phishing attempt, directs recipients to download an APK file titled “SBI KYC AADHAR UPDATE” to avoid service disruption. The State Bank of India did not provide such bogus instructions, according to officials.
As per PIB Fact Check, the purpose of the message is to trick users into divulging confidential financial and personal details. Customers are not required to download APK files for Aadhaar or KYC upgrades, as confirmed by SBI through its official channels.
Installing apps from unknown sources can weaken device security and put financial data at risk, according to cybersecurity experts. In order to trick their targets into taking action, fraudsters often utilise the phrase “Dear SBI customer” and stress the importance of preventing account suspension.
Customers should exercise caution when opening attachments or clicking on links in unsolicited emails or on messaging apps like WhatsApp, as authorities have warned. It is also recommended that users refrain from providing untrusted sources with any personal, banking, or Aadhaar-related information.
SBI has set up a specific reporting channel for clients to report suspicious communications: report.phishing@sbi.co.in. If you receive such an alert, experts advise double-checking it with your bank’s official app or website before doing anything.
Criminals are increasingly taking advantage of the fear of account suspension to steal critical information, and this event highlights a rising tide of phishing assaults that target users of digital banking. People should be careful and only trust official, certified messages as the use of digital banking grows.
