Power Transmission Network Of India Achieves A New Milestone

With 1,407 GVA of transformation capacity supporting more than 5 lakh circuit kilometres (ckm) of transmission lines (220 kV and higher), India’s national power transmission network has achieved a significant infrastructural milestone.

On January 14, 2026, a 628-kilometre, 765-kV transmission line connecting the Bhadla II and Sikar II substations was put into service, marking the accomplishment and allowing for improved evacuation of renewable energy from Rajasthan’s Renewable Energy Zone. An extra 1,100 MW of power from the solar complexes in Bhadla, Ramgarh, and Fatehgarh may be transferred thanks to this project.

With the addition of 2.09 lakh ckm of high-voltage transmission lines and 876 GVA of transformation capacity, India’s transmission network has grown by 71.6% since April 2014. With 120,340 MW of interregional power transfer capacity, grid integration is strengthened and the goal of “One Nation–One Grid–One Frequency” is advanced.

In the future, it is anticipated that ongoing Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) projects will add around 40,000 ckm of transmission lines and 399 GVA of capacity, while Intra-State projects will add an additional 27,500 ckm and 134 GVA. India’s goal of 500 GW of non-fossil power generation by 2030 depends on these expansions.

The 5 lakh ckm milestone highlights the government’s ongoing efforts to improve grid dependability, fortify power infrastructure, and facilitate widespread integration of renewable energy sources throughout the nation.
