PM Modi Dedicates India’s First Fully Automated Dry Bulk Terminal at Haldia to the Nation

The Haldia Bulk Terminal (HBT), built by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), was opened today by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, marking a significant achievement for the maritime infrastructure of eastern India. Featuring direct rail access for efficient cargo movement along the Hooghly River, the terminal is expected to handle 4 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) of dry bulk cargo, including coal, bauxite, and limestone. It is India’s first completely automated dry bulk facility. “The Haldia Bulk Terminal is a next-generation facility that brings full mechanisation and direct rail evacuation to the Hooghly, setting a benchmark for efficiency on India’s eastern seaboard,” noted Mr. Ashwani Gupta, Whole-time Director & CEO, APSEZ. We are making sure that operations are cleaner, safer, and more sustainable by doing away with jetty dumping and reducing cargo loss with modern automation.

As part of the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and Sagarmala Programme, the terminal will be crucial in enhancing supply chains for West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand, which will in turn boost India’s industrial hubs and reduce logistical costs. Logistics expenditures and dwell time are both decreased by the 1.54 km dedicated rail line and the 2,000 T Railway Waggon Loading System. Modern stacker-cum-reclaimers, mobile cranes, and conveyors make freight handling easier, faster, and safer. The environmental effect is reduced when jetty dumping is eliminated.
