Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa announced that from December 18, vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) will not be able to refuel at petrol stations in Delhi.
This measure aims to reduce vehicular emissions, as petrol, diesel, and CNG outlets are instructed to only dispense fuel upon proof of a valid PUCC. Sirsa noted that over 8.66 lakh vehicles have been penalized for non-compliance, leading to increased awareness among owners.
He criticized the Aam Aadmi Party for protesting against pollution, claiming they contributed to it during their governance. The current administration has identified 62 pollution hotspots, unlike the previous government’s 13, and intends to restrict entry of non-BS-VI vehicles from outside Delhi during certain pollution control stages (GRAP III & IV).
Checks will be in place to confirm PUCC validity and compliance, with a detailed crackdown on violators expected, including construction vehicles and non-compliant diesel generators. The government’s efforts have shown improved air quality, with recent AQI figures being approximately 20 points lower than the previous year.
Sirsa emphasized a significant push to eliminate legacy waste and enhance public transport via an electric bus fleet. He urged vehicle owners to obtain PUCC certificates promptly, warning that without compliance, fuel will be denied, underscoring the importance of collective action for clean air.
