No Energy Crunch in India, Govt Confirms Supply Stability

There are no recorded shortages of fuel, diesel or LPG in India, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, which has reiterated that the country’s petroleum and LPG supply situation is still completely under control.

Despite interruptions in international markets, India’s status as the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products guarantees structural stability in domestic availability. Retail gas stations are still running smoothly and have enough inventory.

A “deliberately mischievous” disinformation campaign on social media has been reported by the government, which attributes sporadic incidents of crowding at petrol stations to fake content rather than real supply shortages. To ensure uninterrupted supply chains, oil depots have been running around the clock.

India is sourcing crude from more than 41 international suppliers despite tensions in the Strait of Hormuz; any disruptions are countered by higher inflows from the western hemisphere. Currently, all domestic refineries are operating at more over 100% utilisation.

India maintains a total reserve capacity of 74 days, with an actual stock cover of about 60 days, encompassing oil, petroleum products, and strategic reserves, in contrast to assertions of inadequate reserves. We have already secured the acquisition of crude for the next two months.

Following regulatory actions, domestic LPG production increased by 40% to 50 TMT per day, meeting over 60% of demand and lowering reliance on imports. Furthermore, 800 TMT of LPG cargoes are on their way from nations including Australia, Russia, and the United States, guaranteeing a steady supply via 22 import terminals.

Over 50 lakh LPG cylinders are delivered daily by oil firms, and demand has returned to normal following a brief spike caused by panic orders. To avoid hoarding and illicit marketing, commercial LPG allocations are kept at 50%.

Additionally, the government reaffirmed that the growth of piped natural gas (PNG), with connections increasing from 25 lakh to over 1.5 crore and coverage reaching over 300 geographical areas, is a component of a long-term clean energy policy.

Oil firms have raised credit limits for petrol pump operators, allowing them to maintain bigger inventory levels in order to guarantee smooth gasoline supplies.

The ministry has issued a warning that disseminating misleading information about necessities is illegal and threatened to take legal action against anyone trying to instill fear in the public by making false allegations.
