Nepal Seeks India’s Help to Export More Power to Bangladesh

Nepal’s Energy Minister, Kul Man Ghising, has requested India to permit an additional export of 20 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh, utilizing India’s transmission infrastructure.

Since last year, Nepal has exported 40 MW to Bangladesh under a tripartite agreement. This request aligns with a recent agreement reached with Bangladesh to eventually purchase an additional 40 MW.

Nepali officials believe more power can be exported if India approves the use of its infrastructure, despite uncertainties arising from strained India-Bangladesh relations.

Minister Ghising also sought further funding from India’s EXIM Bank for transmission line projects in Nepal and requested a permanent approval for electricity exports, rather than annual renewals. The meeting concluded with discussions on various issues surrounding power projects developed by Indian companies in Nepal.
