Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the long-standing relationship between India and Ethiopia during his first visit to the country, describing both as partners in the Global South.
In talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Modi highlighted the rich cultural connections and democratic values shared by the two nations, which have collaborated on international platforms, notably with India’s support for the African Union’s G20 membership.
They signed several Memoranda of Understanding, including initiatives focused on peacekeeping and customs cooperation. Abiy appreciated Modi’s commitment to prioritizing African needs in their partnership, stressing the importance of equality and practical cooperation.
During his visit, Modi received a ceremonial welcome, participated in a traditional coffee ceremony, and interacted with the Indian community in Ethiopia, expressing gratitude for their warm reception. He noted that the friendship between India and Ethiopia would continue to strengthen in the future.
