To guarantee a steady supply of cooking gas in the face of changing circumstances in West Asia, the Center has directed all of the domestic LPG production—which has increased by approximately 25%—to residential consumers.
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated in a directive published on 8 March that in order to ensure supply stability, refineries and petrochemical complexes were ordered to boost LPG production.
According to officials, the Strait of Hormuz has been impacted by current geopolitical tensions, but the majority of India’s LPG imports—around 90%—normally flow through it.
In order to protect vital supplies, homes are being given priority, while non-domestic LPG is being saved for important organisations like schools and hospitals.
The distribution of LPG to commercial facilities like restaurants and hotels will be reviewed by a three-member committee that includes executive directors from Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited.
After a recent 60% hike, the government announced that the price of a household LPG cylinder in Delhi is now 913. Despite this, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana recipients still have to pay ₹613 for each cylinder.
The latest price increase, according to officials, means that a PMUY household will spend less than 80 paise daily. The under-recoveries of LPG have been sanctioned at ₹30,000 crore by the government to assist oil-marketing businesses.
While the typical delivery period is still about two and a half days, authorities have also noticed cases of panic buying and hoarding.
Expanding the Delivery Authentication Code system to encompass approximately 90% of LPG clients is being done to reduce diversion at the distributor level. There has been a temporary increase from 21 days to 25 days in the minimum interval between LPG bookings in order to better manage demand.
With 70% of its crude oil shipments now coming through channels outside the Strait of Hormuz, officials in India have assured the public that the country’s supply of crude oil is secure. India buys oil from approximately 40 countries.
