German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Bengaluru on Tuesday to commence a two-day official visit to India, emphasizing the growing strategic importance of Indo-German relations.
The visit, from September 2 to 3, was announced by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, highlighting the strong and evolving ties between the two democracies. This marks Minister Wadephul’s first visit to India in his current capacity. Describing India as a “key partner in the Indo-Pacific,” Wadephul noted the depth and breadth of bilateral cooperation, citing close political, economic, and cultural ties, with significant potential for expansion in security cooperation, technology, innovation, and skilled worker recruitment.
The visit began in Bengaluru with a tour of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) headquarters, reflecting Germany’s interest in space collaboration. Wadephul was scheduled to travel to New Delhi for high-level meetings on Wednesday with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal.
Discussions were expected to encompass trade, security, green energy, digital transformation, and global governance. Wadephul also stressed shared democratic values and the need for like-minded nations to collaborate on international peace and stability, acknowledging India’s increasing influence as the world’s most populous democracy. This visit follows extensive discussions between EAM Jaishankar and Wadephul in Berlin in May 2025.
