Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally opened the Meerut Metro and the Namo Bharat train at Shatabdi Nagar Namo Bharat Station, a major step toward better regional connectivity and urban mobility across the National Capital Region (NCR).
In Uttar Pradesh, the prime minister cut the ribbon on a 5-kilometre section connecting Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar, as well as a 21-kilometre section connecting Meerut South and Modipuram. The final length of the corridor is 82 kilometres, making it the Namo Bharat Corridor from Delhi to Meerut for the nation.
The Namo Bharat system, which can reach speeds of 180 kmph, will greatly shorten the travel time between Delhi and important metropolitan centres like Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar, and Meerut.
Developed into a significant multimodal transport hub, the original station at Sarai Kale Khan now connects to Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station, the Pink Line of the Delhi Metro, Veer Haqeeqat Rai ISBT, and Ring Road.
As part of the project rollout, three other stations in Meerut—Shatabi Nagar, Begumpul, and Modipuram—were also commissioned.
The Prime Minister also cut the ribbon on the new Meerut Metro line, which will run from Modipuram to Meerut South. Sharing its infrastructure with the Namo Bharat RRTS route, the Metro will be an innovative first in India.
Covering the distance in around 30 minutes with all scheduled stops, it becomes the quickest metro system in the country with a maximum operational speed of over 120 km/h.
There will be less congestion on the roads, fewer pollutants from cars, and more time for speedier, more eco-friendly commuting thanks to these developments.
