PEM electrolyser manufacturing in India is set to gain momentum as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) and Norway-based Hystar AS enter a strategic partnership. The agreement will support phased indigenisation and local manufacturing of PEM electrolyser systems for green hydrogen projects. It will also expand BHEL’s portfolio to include both PEM and alkaline electrolyser solutions.
PEM Electrolyser Manufacturing to Support Local Supply Chains
BHEL and Hystar AS signed the agreement in New Delhi on August 13. The partnership will focus on phased indigenisation and local manufacturing of PEM electrolyser systems in India.
The tie-up is aimed at building domestic capabilities for PEM technology. It could also strengthen local supply chains for green hydrogen projects and reduce reliance on imported equipment.
BHEL to Offer PEM and Alkaline Solutions
The partnership will expand BHEL’s electrolyser portfolio. The company will now be positioned to offer PEM and alkaline electrolyser solutions for green hydrogen applications.
Earlier this year, BHEL partnered with thyssenkrupp nucera India for alkaline electrolyser systems. The latest agreement with Hystar adds PEM technology to its portfolio.
This gives BHEL access to both major electrolyser technology routes. It also strengthens its ability to support different green hydrogen project requirements.
Supporting Green Hydrogen Project Execution
The collaboration is expected to strengthen BHEL’s project execution capabilities in the green hydrogen sector.
BHEL has extensive engineering and manufacturing experience across power, transmission, renewables, oil and gas, transportation, defence and aerospace. The company is using this expertise to expand into clean energy technologies.
The partnership also aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and Make in India initiative. Local production of PEM electrolysers could support domestic manufacturing and help develop capabilities across the green hydrogen value chain.
The BHEL-Hystar tie-up marks another step towards building India’s domestic electrolyser ecosystem. It could support local technology capabilities and strengthen the country’s position in the growing green hydrogen market.
