Ashwini Vaishnaw Highlights Women-Centric Job Creation in Electronics Sector

Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the electronics sector in India is generating significant blue-collar job opportunities for women, emphasized by Taiwan-based Foxconn hiring nearly 30,000 employees—80% of whom are women—for its new iPhone assembly facility in Bengaluru.

Vaishnaw highlighted that such a women-led facility would have been unimaginable a decade ago. The factory primarily employs first-time female entrants to the workforce, aged 19-24, and anticipates increasing its workforce to approximately 50,000 by next year.

The facility, which began trial production of the iPhone 16 and is now assembling the iPhone 17 Pro Max, is part of Foxconn’s larger investment of Rs 20,000 crore in India, making it the largest manufacturing site for the company in the country, surpassing its original Tamil Nadu plant with 41,000 employees.

Along with current operations in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana, Foxconn’s expansion reflects a significant growth in its Indian operations, including a recent announcement to invest Rs 15,000 crore in Tamil Nadu to create 14,000 high-value jobs.
