Anand Mahindra: AI Will Make IT Services More Critical, Not Obsolete

Tech Mahindra Chairman Anand Mahindra has denied rumours that AI could eat away at India’s IT services business, saying the technology will revolutionise the field instead of displacing it. At the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Mahindra addressed the shareholders and noted that while comparable anxieties have accompanied every technology revolution, history demonstrates that innovation ultimately leads to new economic prospects.

The “elephant in the room,” as Mahindra put it, is artificial intelligence. He claims that forecasts that AI could wipe out India’s IT services industry are incorrect. On the contrary, he maintained that the industry’s function will acquire greater importance as businesses look for reliable IT companies to help them adopt AI in a responsible, secure, and massive scale.

Mahindra claims that AI has progressed beyond its original purpose as a productivity tool and is now an integral part of business operations, impacting workflow design, customer service, risk management, and strategic decision-making. Nevertheless, he stressed that there is a lot more to integrating AI across big companies than just adopting AI models. This is because organisations still deal with legacy systems, data fragmentation, regulatory restrictions, and accumulated technology debt.

Tech Mahindra and other IT service providers may assist businesses in navigating this complexity by providing AI integration, governance frameworks, regulatory compliance assurance, and bespoke AI-powered business solutions, among other services. He pointed out that these qualities will be crucial for companies to have when they go from AI testing to implementing it company-wide.

Mahindra drew a comparison to the smartphone revolution to illustrate his point that AI isn’t just valuable in and of itself, but in the apps, connections, workflows, and business solutions that are developed around it. Similar to how ecosystems made smartphones necessary, the impact of AI will be determined by how well organisations incorporate technology into their operations.

In addition, Mahindra stressed that a company’s proprietary data, domain knowledge, institutional knowledge, and business procedures will gradually become its “alpha” (long-term competitive advantage). He explained that Tech Mahindra’s goal is to assist clients in maintaining and improving their competitive advantages by providing them with AI-enabled platforms that are secure, responsible, and tailored to their specific needs.

Anand Mahindra’s comments provide credence to the idea that artificial intelligence is ushering in a new era of opportunity for the IT services business in India. In the global digital economy, IT organisations that can integrate, govern, and scale AI solutions will be more important as businesses speed up their adoption of AI.
