Amit Shah Applauds New Wave of Metro and Airport Infrastructure Projects

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah has welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval of a series of key infrastructure projects aimed at bolstering connectivity, enhancing regional development, and accelerating economic growth across multiple states.

The Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi cleared several high-impact proposals, signalling a strong push toward modernising India’s transport ecosystem:

Metro Expansion for Urban Mobility

  • Approval was granted for the extension of the Ahmedabad Metro Phase-2 from GIFT City to Shahpur at an estimated cost of ₹1,067 crore.
  • The project is expected to provide affordable, high-speed urban connectivity, catalysing educational, commercial and corporate growth in the region.

Railway Multi-Tracking Projects

  • Four large-scale railway multi-tracking initiatives worth ₹9,072 crore received Cabinet approval.
  • These include doubling the Gondia–Jabalpur line and adding third and fourth tracks on key routes spanning Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand and Bihar — strategic moves aimed at enhancing freight capacity, supporting industrial activity and boosting tourism links.

Upgraded Terminal at Srinagar Airport

  • A new Integrated Terminal Building at Srinagar Airport will be developed at a projected cost of ₹1,667 crore.
  • Spread over 71,500 square metres and equipped with multi-level car parking and state-of-the-art security infrastructure, the modern terminal is expected to strengthen passenger handling capacity, spur employment and facilitate trade in the Kashmir region.

Energy Sector Boost

  • The Cabinet also approved raising the investment limit for Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (Powergrid) to ₹7,500 crore, reinforcing the government’s commitment to scaling renewable energy and modern power infrastructure.

Speaking on the decisions, Mr Shah underscored the initiatives’ potential to improve regional connectivity, drive economic inclusion and deliver sustained benefits to citizens across sectors. These approvals align with the government’s broader agenda of strengthening infrastructure under the PM GatiShakti framework and promoting seamless mobility nationwide.

As India continues its growth trajectory, these infrastructure investments are expected to catalyse long-term development, improve the quality of life and enhance competitiveness in both domestic and global contexts.
