India Eyes 100 GW Nuclear Power Capacity by 2047: CEA Chief

India is targeting a significant expansion of its nuclear power capacity—from the current 8.8 GW to 100 GW by 2047—as part of its long-term clean energy transition strategy, according to Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairperson of the Central Electricity Authority.

Addressing a session on India’s nuclear energy roadmap in the national capital, Prasad asserted that a comprehensive, forward-thinking strategy is already in place to achieve this bold vision. He stressed that sweeping legislative reforms are a driving force, with the pivotal Shanti Act already enacted. Work is advancing rapidly to finalise critical rules, procedures, and implementation frameworks.

The government is unwavering in its mission to accelerate policy implementation, strengthen financing mechanisms, and standardise processes—all aimed at maximising cost efficiency in nuclear energy expansion. The roadmap targets vital enablers, from ensuring robust fuel security and site readiness to cultivating a highly skilled workforce capable of powering this transformation.

In a significant shift for the sector, Prasad indicated that nuclear energy could see broader participation in the coming years. While the industry has traditionally been dominated by a single operator, as many as 10–12 companies are expected to enter the space, potentially boosting investment and expediting project timelines.

Highlighting its operational advantages, Prasad reiterated that nuclear energy remains a reliable baseload power source, providing consistent, stable electricity generation. He also underscored that, when managed effectively, nuclear power remains among the safest forms of energy generation.

Looking to the future, Prasad affirmed that cutting-edge technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are set to be transformative in shaping India’s dynamic energy mix. While still under development globally, SMRs promise scalable, flexible, and cleaner alternatives—potentially propelling India’s nuclear journey forward at an accelerated pace.
