Narendra Modi Hails Record Solar Capacity Boost in India

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India has reinforced its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing clean energy markets with its record-breaking annual solar capacity increase of about 45 GW in FY 2025-26, substantially twice the rate from the previous year.

The country’s rapid progress towards energy security, sustainable development, and its long-term “Viksit Bharat” objective is noted by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, who also recognised the milestone.

The majority of the growth came from large-scale installations in important states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. These states are crucial in India’s effort to shift to a cleaner power mix.

Solid operational momentum was maintained, as seen by the largest monthly addition of 6.65 GW of solar capacity in March 2026. This reflects enhanced execution capabilities in both the utility-scale and distribution segments.

Thanks to improved domestic production, grid integration, and regulatory frameworks, India’s installed solar capacity has already exceeded 150 GW. The renewable energy pipeline and efforts to decarbonise industry are anticipated to be bolstered by the record addition.

As a result of the development, investments in solar production, green hydrogen, transmission infrastructure, and battery storage are projected to surge, making India a promising export hub for associated components like modules and inverters.

In the meantime, investor trust in the sector was signalled by the Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited’s good financial performance, which was demonstrated by the handing over of a dividend cheque of ₹115 crore to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.

India surpassed Brazil to become the world’s third-largest installer of renewable energy, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency’s global rankings.

With overall non-fossil fuel capacity reaching 283.46 GW as of March 31, 2026, and renewable sources accounting for a record 51.5% of India’s total energy demand in July 2025, the industry is clearly gaining momentum.

With this achievement, India has solidified its position as a world leader in the energy transition, which will help the country achieve its environmental and economic growth goals in the long run.
