Energy Storage Milestone: ACME Solar Commissions 143 MW BESS in Rajasthan

A major milestone in the development of renewable energy infrastructure and grid stability in India has been reached with the commissioning of 142.67 MW / 481.49 MWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Rajasthan by ACME Solar Holdings Limited.

With the newly operational storage capacity, ACME Solar has taken the first step in deploying its 585 MW / 2,011.24 MWh BESS through its SPVs. The energy storage systems are anticipated to be crucial in regulating the electricity supply and demand, as they are linked to the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS). As renewable energy generation in India grows, battery energy storage devices will play an increasingly crucial role. These systems enable the storage of excess power during periods of low demand, which may then be returned to the grid during periods of high demand.

Acme Solar claims that in the near future, the newly-commissioned BESS units will function as merchant units, allowing the company to profit from price differences between periods of high and low electricity demand.

Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) projects will eventually incorporate these storage assets. These projects will run under power purchase agreements that can be up to 25 years old. A better and more reliable electricity grid is the goal of energy storage systems like BESS. The systems work to control variations in renewable energy production by charging batteries when power demand is low and discharging them when demand is high.

This feature is anticipated to enhance grid stability, power utilisation, and the integration of renewable energy sources like wind and solar more smoothly. Installing around 17 GWh of battery storage capacity across several states in India over the next few years is necessary for ACME Solar’s expanded renewable energy portfolio.

With a diverse portfolio that includes solar, wind, hybrid, energy storage, and FDRE projects, the company is well-positioned to play a pivotal role in India’s shift toward cleaner power generation.
