India and Nepal Agree to Strengthen Cooperation in Agriculture Sector

Nepal and India have agreed to establish a biennial action plan within three months to enhance agricultural cooperation, as discussed in their ninth Joint Agriculture Working Group meeting in Kathmandu.

The countries will develop individual action plans to foster collaboration between their agricultural universities and research institutions, including the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Nepal Agricultural Research Council (NARC).

They also plan to cooperate on livestock, poultry, and fisheries through a new memorandum of understanding. Additional agreements include improving logistical processes for chemical fertilisers, fostering agricultural infrastructure, and maintaining dialogue to resolve food quality and quarantine issues.

India reaffirmed its commitment to expand cooperation in research and technology transfer per its “Neighbourhood First” policy, while Nepal expressed gratitude for India’s assistance in livestock development.

Discussions further covered areas such as digital agriculture, climate-resilient farming, and food security, with plans for the next meeting to be held in India at a mutually agreed date.
