New income-tax return (ITR) forms and related rules will be notified by the Income Tax Department by January 2026, with implementation set for April 1, 2026, as part of the transition to the Income Tax Act, 2025.
Central Board of Direct Taxes chairman Ravi Agrawal emphasized that the new forms will be designed to be simpler and more user-friendly.
Analysts have indicated the need for the updated rules to use clearer language and align with new TDS provisions. Additionally, the Income Tax Department plans to issue outstanding tax refunds by December 2023, after a scrutiny of potential errors in refund claims.
