Finance Panel to Examine AI and Digital Assets

Parliament’s Standing Committee on Finance has selected 46 subjects for detailed examination and reporting during 2026–27, covering artificial intelligence (AI) in finance, virtual digital assets, currency management, price stability, banking, taxation and public sector asset monetisation.

According to a Lok Sabha bulletin, the committee will examine issues spanning financial regulation, economic policy, taxation, public sector assets and corporate affairs. BJP MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has been reappointed as chairperson following the recent reconstitution of parliamentary committees. The panel comprises 21 Lok Sabha members and 10 Rajya Sabha members.

Financial Stability and Regulation in Focus

The committee will examine matters under the Ministry of Finance, including the Departments of Economic Affairs, Expenditure, Public Enterprises, Investment and Public Asset Management, Revenue, and Financial Services. Its remit also covers the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).

Key subjects include price and currency stability, currency management, financial-sector regulation, public sector asset monetisation and the changing macroeconomic landscape. The panel will also review banking, pension and health insurance, social security for informal-sector workers, small savings schemes and the Reserve Bank of India’s role in the evolving economy.

A performance review of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) also features on the agenda.

AI, Digital Assets and Taxation

The panel will examine customs, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and direct tax reforms, alongside regulatory gaps in the non-banking financial company (NBFC) sector. It will also study virtual digital assets and the way forward, as well as the emerging issues and prospects of artificial intelligence in the financial sector.

Other subjects include challenges facing the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), corporate social responsibility, corporate e-governance and auditor accountability.

Review of Economic Data and Government Programmes

The committee will examine NITI Aayog’s role in preparing sectoral roadmaps and the functioning of the Aspirational Districts Programme.

For MoSPI, the panel will study national accounts statistics and ways to strengthen India’s economic data systems.

The committee’s 2026–27 agenda covers financial stability, emerging technologies, taxation, corporate accountability and economic data. Its examination of these subjects will form part of parliamentary scrutiny of financial and economic policy during the year.
