India has joined the United States and 24 other countries in a global 6G initiative aimed at shaping the development of next-generation telecommunications networks.
The initiative seeks to ensure that future 6G networks reflect shared security interests, strengthen global competitiveness and promote technological innovation. The US Department of Commerce announced India’s participation in the international effort through a social media post.
India 6G Initiative Focuses on Global Cooperation
The announcement followed a meeting between Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on the sidelines of the G20 Innovation Ministerial.
The two leaders discussed the future of 6G technology and the importance of international cooperation in developing secure and advanced telecommunications networks.
India and the US also discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) and data centres.
India and US Discuss AI, Semiconductors and Data Centres
During the meeting, Jitin Prasada encouraged greater US investment in ISM 2.0 and proposed strengthening the India-US partnership in AI technology. He also shared a mechanism for safeguards related to AI.
Prasada led the Indian delegation at the G20 Innovation Ministerial held on September 1 and 2 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The meeting was hosted by the US Department of Commerce and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).
G20 Innovation Ministerial Highlights Emerging Technologies
The G20 Innovation Ministerial concluded with the adoption of the G20 Innovation Ministerial Statement. The statement highlighted the potential of emerging technologies to drive prosperity, productivity and economic opportunities.
India reaffirmed its commitment to building strategic partnerships in AI, semiconductors, digital public infrastructure (DPI), robotics and other emerging technologies.
These partnerships are expected to create greater opportunities for innovation and economic growth while supporting improvements in the quality of life for citizens.
