Kavach 4.0 is set for wider deployment as Indian Railways has approved Rs 170 crore for the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. The project will cover the remaining 712 route kilometres of the Moradabad Division under Northern Railway. The deployment will strengthen railway safety and add an advanced layer of protection against collisions and other unsafe train operations.
Kavach 4.0 to Cover 712 Route Km
Indian Railways has approved Rs 170 crore for the deployment of Kavach 4.0 across the remaining 712 route kilometres of the Moradabad Division.
The project forms part of Indian Railways’ wider programme to modernise signalling and expand advanced train protection systems across its network.
Kavach is an indigenous Automatic Train Protection system designed to monitor train movements and support safer railway operations. It can intervene automatically when it detects potentially unsafe situations.
Kavach 4.0 Strengthens Train Safety
A key function of Kavach is to help prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD). SPAD occurs when a train passes a stop signal without authority.
The system can automatically apply brakes when required. It can also help control train speed during critical situations and reduce the risk of train collisions.
The wider deployment of Kavach 4.0 is therefore expected to strengthen passenger safety and improve operational reliability across the identified railway sections.
Railway Safety Indicators Show Improvement
The latest Kavach 4.0 approval comes as Indian Railways continues to improve its safety performance.
Train accidents declined by 88% to 16 incidents in 2025–26, compared with 135 incidents in 2014–15. The Ministry of Railways also reported two train accidents in the financial year up to June.
The Consequential Accident Index declined to 0.01 in 2025–26, from 0.11 in 2014–15. This represents a reduction of about 91%.
Railways Increases Safety Investment
Indian Railways has also increased spending on safety infrastructure. Safety-related expenditure rose from Rs 39,200 crore in 2013–14 to Rs 1,20,389 crore in 2026–27.
The investment supports multiple safety initiatives, including modern signalling, track infrastructure and train protection systems.
Alongside Kavach deployment, Indian Railways has expanded electrical and electronic interlocking systems with centralised operations. These systems have been provided at 6,671 stations, supported by complete track circuiting.
The railway network has also completed the interlocking of 10,395 Level Crossing Gates to improve safety at railway crossings.
Kavach 4.0 Supports Railway Modernisation
The Rs 170 crore approval for Kavach 4.0 marks another step in Indian Railways’ railway safety modernisation programme.
Its deployment across 712 route kilometres in the Moradabad Division will expand the coverage of India’s indigenous train protection technology.
With greater use of automatic protection, modern signalling and digital safety systems, Indian Railways is strengthening its approach to safer and more efficient train operations.
