India is expanding its India refining capacity from around 272 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) towards 300 MMTPA, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.
The expansion comes amid uncertainty in the global refining market. It is expected to strengthen India’s position as a reliable energy supplier and support growing energy partnerships with other countries.
India Refining Capacity Set to Reach 300 MMTPA
India currently has 23 refineries with a combined refining capacity of around 272 MMTPA. The country processes nearly 270 million tonnes of crude oil annually.
Puri said the planned expansion towards 300 MMTPA will strengthen India’s position in the global energy market. India is already the world’s third-largest refiner and remains a net exporter of refined petroleum products.
India Refining Capacity to Support Energy Security
The expansion will help India maintain a strong refining base amid changes and uncertainties in global energy markets.
Puri highlighted India’s role as a dependable energy partner, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region. A larger refining base can support domestic demand while allowing India to continue supplying refined petroleum products to international markets.
India and Mauritius Deepen Energy Cooperation
India is also strengthening its energy partnership with Mauritius. The two countries have signed an MoU for cooperation in the oil and gas sector.
Separately, IndianOil and Mauritius’ State Trading Corporation have entered into a five-year agreement for the assured supply of petroleum products.
Under the agreement, IndianOil will supply petrol, diesel, marine gas oil and Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to Mauritius.
IndianOil Deal to Improve Mauritius’ Energy Security
The long-term supply agreement is expected to provide Mauritius with greater certainty in petroleum product supplies.
It can also support price stability and strengthen the island nation’s energy security. Reliable fuel supplies will support mobility, connectivity and wider economic activity in Mauritius.
India Strengthens Position as Global Energy Hub
The planned increase in India refining capacity comes as the country seeks to strengthen its role in the global energy system.
With expanding refining infrastructure and deeper international partnerships, India is positioning itself as a stable supplier of refined petroleum products and a growing energy hub.
