India has strengthened its naval surveillance capability. The Ministry of Defence signed a ₹1,943 crore contract with General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. (GA-ASI). The deal covers two MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones. The Indian Navy will lease these High-Altitude Long-Endurance (HALE) aircraft for 30 months. Officials signed the contract in New Delhi in the presence of senior Defence Ministry officials. The deal will boost the Navy’s maritime domain awareness and strengthen ISR capabilities across the Indian Ocean Region.

MQ-9B Sea Guardian Deal Boosts Maritime Surveillance

The MQ-9B Sea Guardian drones carry advanced systems. They feature sophisticated sensors and specialised payloads. These tools will sharpen the Navy’s maritime domain awareness. The aircraft will monitor large stretches of ocean. They will track vessel movements and maritime activity in real time.

The drones will deliver persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) coverage. This coverage spans the Indian Ocean Region. The Navy will track maritime developments more effectively. It will also respond faster to emerging threats. The region holds strategic importance for India’s security interests.

Broader Push to Strengthen Defence Capabilities

This contract follows another recent defence deal. The Ministry signed a ₹1,577 crore agreement with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and NIBE Private Limited. That deal covers loiter munition systems for the Indian Army. Together, these contracts show India’s steady push to modernise its defence infrastructure.
