India Accelerates SAF, CORSIA Push Ahead of Mandatory 2027 Deadline

On Wednesday, India’s Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu reviewed the country’s readiness with key stakeholders in regards to the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), signalling that India is intensifying its preparations for the transition. Topics covered in the meeting included preparations for the global aviation carbon reduction framework’s mandatory phase.

The discussion went over India’s plans for CORSIA, the ICAO’s carbon reduction framework, which stands for the International Civil Aviation Organization. On January 1, 2027, the mandatory phase of CORSIA is expected to commence.

In addition to ongoing stakeholder engagements and inter-ministerial deliberations, Naidu stated that the draft SAF policy is nearing completion. In order to get ready for more widespread use of the fuel, the government is also looking into various SAF paths.

According to the minister, passengers and airlines should be burdened as little as possible by the process. He emphasised the significance of researching current SAF paths to find the most cost-effective mechanism that encompasses the whole process, from production to airport drop-in.

Production, certification, and supply-chain development of SAFs throughout the nation were also reviewed at the meeting. The government’s evaluation of readiness for SAF adoption and CORSIA compliance included these categories.

Stakeholders were instructed by Naidu to move quickly on the matters that had been discussed. The government’s goal is to make sure India is ready for the mandatory CORSIA phase that starts on January 1, 2027, as early as possible.
