Following her fruitful state visits to North Macedonia, Romania, and Moldova, President Droupadi Murmu strengthened India’s diplomatic outreach and strategic engagement with Europe. On Sunday, she returned to New Delhi. The trips aimed to deepen political discourse, increase bilateral collaboration, and discover new avenues for trade, education, science, and cultural exchanges, as reported by the President’s Secretariat. Her homecoming was announced by the official X handle of the Indian president following the end of high-level diplomatic talks across three European nations.
On the last stop of her journey, Romania, President Murmu met with President Nicusor Dan of Romania in the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest for lengthy discussions. The two heads of state then exchanged views on regional, international, and multilateral issues after receiving a ceremonial welcome and guard of honour. They then discussed the full range of India-Romania relations. In addition to establishing a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Bucharest and signing two MoUs pertaining to sports cooperation and science and technology, the visit also led to the signing of two more MoUs, further increasing academic and institutional cooperation. Additionally, this was the first state visit to Romania by the president of India in almost 30 years.
Earlier, President Murmu travelled to North Macedonia to meet with Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski, President Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, and others to explore opportunities for increased cooperation in a variety of fields. As a sign of how seriously both nations take strengthening their bilateral relations, Foreign Minister Timcho Mucunski welcomed her in Skopje. Discussions centred on enhancing political, economic, and cultural ties between North Macedonia and India as well as broadening collaboration in areas of shared interest.
As part of her diplomatic tour, President Murmu made history by visiting Moldova, making her the first Indian president to do so. As part of her visit to Chisinau, she met with Speaker Igor Grosu and other members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, where she reiterated India’s aim to establish a long-term, mutually advantageous engagement with Moldova. The President’s three-nation tour, which he undertook with the support of Minister of State Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya and Members of Parliament Dr. Dinesh Sharma and Vijay Baghel, demonstrated India’s increasing involvement in Europe and its determination to fortify diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations.
