World Population Day 2026: UNFPA Reports 83% of Indian Youth Are Hopeful Despite Economic Pressures

World Population Day 2026 serves as a poignant reminder that, rather than fixating on population numbers alone, sustainable development must prioritise investments in people, and that India’s youthful population is its greatest demographic strength. Empowering young people now will determine the country’s future for decades to come, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
Even if worries about the economy, inequality, and international conflicts are on the rise, 83% of young Indians surveyed in the most recent Lives, Choices, and Futures—Demographic Futures Survey 2026 expressed optimism about the future. This generation’s results show that they are adapting to new social and economic realities without giving up on their dreams of a better life.

Having a family is still a goal for a lot of young individuals, according to the survey. The difficulties that many young people encounter prior to beginning children are brought to light by the fact that factors such as secure job, affordable housing, gender equality, and financial stability are becoming more influential in marriage and parenthood decisions.

According to UNFPA, increasing availability of good healthcare, education, decent jobs, and social protections is the only way for India to reap the benefits of a large population. These investments will support the long-term economic growth of the country while also helping young people achieve their dreams.

Equally vital, according to the agency, is attaining a gender dividend. India may benefit greatly from its demographic transition if it takes steps to ensure that young women have equal rights, opportunities, and choices; this will have a multiplicative effect on family, community, and national development.
