Rural Assam Gets ₹299 Crore Infrastructure Boost; Set to Enhance Village Tourism Prospects

For the fiscal year 2025-26, the Union Government disbursed more than ₹299 crore to rural local governments in Assam through the grants offered by the 15th Finance Commission (XV-FC). The state’s Panchayati Raj institutions will be able to use the monies to bolster development efforts and improve grassroots governance.

The amount of ₹256.60 crore in untied funds, together with ₹42.70 crore in withheld payments from the first installment, are both included in the grant. The administration claims that all levels of rural governance in Assam will reap the benefits of the released monies. The withheld portion of the first instalment for FY 2025-26, amounting to ₹42.70 crore, will also be distributed to these councils.

The recommendations for the grants are made by the Panchayati Raj Ministry and the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department under the Jal Shakti Ministry; the funds are then disbursed by the Finance Ministry.

Funds are distributed to states in two instalments each fiscal year to assist rural local bodies under the framework of the 15th Finance Commission. The 29 subjects listed in the Eleventh Schedule of the Constitution can be addressed by Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) with the help of the untied grants.

The money, however, isn’t available for things like administrative establishment costs or salaries. Aiming to strengthen local self-governance organisations and enhance public services in rural India, the Union Government is providing financial aid through the 15th Finance Commission.

The most recent distribution of cash is expected to enable rural organisations in Assam to expedite development projects and enhance vital community services.
