Prime Minister Narendra Modi has added a historic chapter to India’s diplomatic journey by receiving Israel’s highest parliamentary honour, the Speaker of the Knesset Medal, during his ongoing visit to Jerusalem. This rare distinction underscores India’s balanced and principled engagement in the West Asian geopolitical landscape.

The prestigious medal was conferred upon PM Modi by Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana following his address to Israel’s Parliament — an honour that marks the first time an Indian Prime Minister has received this accolade. The recognition acknowledges his exceptional leadership in deepening and elevating the strategic partnership between India and Israel, spanning defence, technology, agriculture, innovation, economic cooperation and cultural ties.
In his address to the Parliament — the first ever by an Indian PM — Modi received a standing ovation, highlighting the warmth of the bilateral relationship. Accepting the honour, he reiterated that it symbolises not just an individual achievement but a tribute to the enduring friendship between India and Israel.
What makes this moment even more significant is Modi’s unique distinction of being one of the few world leaders ever honoured with the highest civilian awards from both Israel and the State of Palestine. Earlier, in 2018, he had been conferred the Grand Collar of the State of Palestine, the nation’s top civilian award for foreign dignitaries — a reflection of India’s balanced diplomacy in the region.
The conferment of Israel’s highest parliamentary honour comes amid India’s focus on strengthening multifaceted ties with the Middle East while championing peace, cooperation and strategic partnerships. Analysts believe the recognition reflects decades of sustained diplomatic engagement and mutual respect between the two democracies.
