NHPC Achieves Engineering Feat at Subansiri Lower with Massive Rotor Installation

The 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, which is being built by NHPC Limited, will be completed on March 1, 2026, with the successful lowering of the Generator Rotor of Unit #5, which weighed an incredible 673 metric tonnes, into the generator pit.

India has achieved a significant milestone in its renewable energy infrastructure development with the handling of the heaviest equipment ever seen in a hydro power plant.

Careful preparation, precise engineering, and faultless cooperation among all parties involved were required to complete the exceedingly complicated task. Commissioning of the project is greatly advanced by this activity, which is an essential component of the electro-mechanical erection activities.

Now that the rotors are in place, Unit #5 can begin boxing up, which will speed up the testing and commissioning processes that follow.

The head of the Subansiri Lower Project and executive director Rajendra Prasad complimented the whole project team and GE Vernova for reaching this engineering milestone. This milestone brings the project one step closer to fully operationalising the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, a major hydropower project in India, by commissioning five units totalling 1250 MW out of a total of eight units (8 × 250 MW).

With this achievement, India has proven once again that it is serious about increasing its renewable energy capacity and ensuring its energy independence in the future.
