IndiGo Appoints Willie Walsh as CEO to Lead Next Growth Phase

Following Pieter Elbers’ retirement earlier this month, InterGlobe Aviation Limited has chosen Willie Walsh as Chief Executive Officer of IndiGo, pending regulatory approvals.

Walsh is slated to join IndiGo by August 3, 2026. His time as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) will end on July 31, 2026.

Walsh has a wealth of experience managing global networks and large-scale airline operations from his time as CEO of British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG).

According to IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta, the airline’s future growth would be driven by Walsh’s leadership as it navigates challenging market realities. Crucial to the airline’s reform path was Walsh’s global vision and operational competence, according to Managing Director Rahul Bhatia.

Walsh is tasked for guiding the airline’s strategic direction, with an emphasis on improving operational efficiency, expanding the network, developing commercial strategies, and enhancing the passenger experience.

Even though IndiGo is still the biggest airline in India, the leadership change comes after a difficult period for the company, which included operational difficulties in late 2025.
