Anurag Jain has taken charge as the new Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog. The appointment places him at the helm of the government’s key policy think tank. Background and Career Journey of Anurag Jain
Jain belongs to the 1989-batch IAS officer cadre of Madhya Pradesh. He carries nearly four decades of experience in governance and public administration. He previously served as Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh. He has also held several senior positions across state and Central governments.
Key Central Government Roles
At the Centre, Jain served as Secretary in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. He also served as Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). His experience spans infrastructure development, industrial policy, economic development and administration. These areas are expected to strengthen NITI Aayog’s policy formulation and implementation work.
Tenure and Expected Impact
Jain’s tenure as NITI Aayog CEO runs for two years, or until further orders. The terms and conditions applicable to his predecessor will govern his appointment. His arrival is expected to strengthen coordination between the Centre and states. It will also support the government’s development priorities. Earlier this year, economist Ashok Kumar Lahiri was appointed Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, replacing Suman K Bery.
