Kavach Version 4.0 will be deployed across 660 route km of the Izzatnagar Division of North Eastern Railway (NER). Indian Railways has approved the project at an estimated cost of ₹295 crore. The move will strengthen train safety infrastructure across the identified sections.
The project has been approved under the umbrella work for providing Kavach with a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) communication backbone across the balance sections of Indian Railways.
Kavach Version 4.0 to Strengthen Train Safety
Kavach is India’s indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. It is designed to help prevent Signal Passed at Danger (SPAD) incidents and train collisions by continuously monitoring train movements.
The system can automatically apply brakes when required. It also supports safe train operations at the maximum permissible speed, subject to operating conditions and other safety requirements.
The technology is designed to improve operational reliability across railway sections. It can also support train operations during challenging weather conditions, including dense fog.
Kavach Version 4.0 to Cover Izzatnagar Division
The approved project will cover the remaining sections of the Izzatnagar Division under North Eastern Railway. The deployment will extend Kavach coverage across 660 route km.
The project forms part of Indian Railways’ broader programme to expand Kavach along with an LTE-based communication backbone.
The estimated investment of ₹295 crore reflects the scale of the planned safety infrastructure deployment. The project will add to the technology systems supporting train movement and operational safety on the division.
LTE Communication Backbone to Support Deployment
