The Competition Commission of India (CCI) hosted the Meeting of Heads of BRICS Competition Authorities on August 8, 2026, in Udaipur, Rajasthan, as part of India’s BRICS Chairship 2026.
The meeting brought together heads and senior representatives of competition authorities from BRICS member countries to discuss developments in competition law and policy and strengthen cooperation in addressing emerging challenges in increasingly interconnected markets.
CCI Chairperson Ravneet Kaur, in her inaugural address, highlighted the shared responsibility of BRICS competition authorities to promote competitive markets that support efficiency, consumer welfare, innovation and fair opportunities for businesses.
She also pointed to the growing cross border nature of digital markets and emerging technologies. She said continued cooperation and knowledge sharing would be important for developing effective approaches to competition enforcement as markets evolve.
The Chairperson also highlighted the global shift towards renewable energy and sustainability. She said cooperation among BRICS competition authorities could help support fair and competitive renewable energy markets while contributing to sustainable growth and energy security.
She stressed that competition law interventions should remain principled and evidence based and should continue to focus on the core objectives of competition law.
During the meeting, the heads of BRICS competition authorities exchanged views on recent developments in their respective jurisdictions. Discussions covered enforcement initiatives, institutional developments and emerging competition challenges in domestic markets.
Focus on renewable energy markets
As part of India’s BRICS Chairship, the CCI led a collaborative study titled “Emerging Competition Landscape in the Renewable Energy Sector in BRICS.”
The study examined changing competition dynamics in renewable energy markets across BRICS countries and identified areas where the competition authorities could work together in the future. Its key findings were presented during the meeting.
The discussions also resulted in the adoption of a Joint Statement titled “Strengthening Cooperation to Promote Fair Competition, including in Renewable Energy Markets.”
The statement reflects the commitment of BRICS competition authorities to support competitive, innovative, resilient and sustainable renewable energy markets. It also highlights the importance of knowledge sharing in addressing competition issues linked to the global energy transition.
Continued cooperation among BRICS competition authorities
Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) also briefed participants on preparations for the 10th BRICS International Competition Conference, which is scheduled to be held in Brazil in 2027.
The meeting concluded with the heads of BRICS competition authorities reaffirming their commitment to continued cooperation, dialogue and knowledge sharing. The authorities also agreed on the importance of working together to address new competition challenges emerging from increasingly interconnected markets.
