Government Security Concerns Prompt WhatsApp to Pause Username Feature in India

In response to concerns voiced by the Indian government about the potential rise in incidents of online fraud, phishing, and identity theft, WhatsApp has chosen to postpone the implementation of its planned username feature in the country. Officials have received the firm’s word that the feature will remain in the works until further communication is established.

The messaging platform operated by Meta was recently asked by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to explain the security safeguards that are placed into the function. Following the expiration of the initial deadline, the government has now given WhatsApp three more days to respond.

The suggested update would make it possible for WhatsApp users to establish private connections without disclosing their actual phone numbers. Cybercriminals may find it simpler to trick people or impersonate legitimate individuals or organisations if they are able to use anonymous usernames, according to officials.

In order to go over the planned rollout and the user protection measures, a Meta delegation met with MeitY officials. A number of security measures have been put in place to decrease abuse and increase user safety, according to the company.

WhatsApp has also made it clear that users would not be required to create a username. It went on to say that in order to prevent anyone other than the legitimate owners from claiming them, all usernames associated with government agencies, famous people, celebrities, Instagram, and Facebook have already been reserved.

The feature will not be released in India until the government is satisfied that sufficient consumer protection and cybersecurity measures are in place. This decision comes as WhatsApp is still working on the feature for a wider worldwide debut later this year.
