The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has authorised $182 million in extra funding to scale up flood and riverbank erosion management along the Brahmaputra River in Assam, significantly enhancing Northeast India’s readiness for disasters.
The continuing $200 million climate-resilience project, which was approved in 2023, is strengthened by this action, increasing the project’s overall scope to over $487 million (including state payments). By eschewing conventional solutions in favour of a comprehensive, nature-integrated strategy, the new financing aims to make Assam a disaster-resilient state. 63.5 kilometres of new riverbank protection infrastructure are being built. installation of cutting-edge systems to restore damaged land and encourage sediment deposition. Implementation of reed propagation and wetland restoration to improve ecological resilience while stabilising banks. expanding and improving current flood embankments that are resilient to disasters.
This massive investment positions Assam as a global benchmark for climate adaptation. The initiative intends to achieve an internal rate of return of 15.3%, mostly through decreased land loss, by reclaiming land and empowering women through resilient agriculture.
